Oh Boy Your Family Will Enjoy Drayton Entertainment’s Annie

Last night we had the opportunity to attend Annie at the Hamilton Family Theatre in Cambridge Ontario (formerly the Dunfield Theatre), and in the words of Annie “Oh Boy” did we enjoy it!  The story begins within the walls of an orphanage during the Great Depression. There, Annie is comforting the youngest orphan with the story of how her parents left her there as a baby with a promise that they will come for her one day.  This story helps to lift the spirits of the young girl and foreshadows how Annie will to continue to inspire those she comes across throughout the show.

Each character in this musical is brought to life using song and dance. There are many show-stopping scenes and heartfelt musical numbers. The characters use them to display their hardships and aspirations in this show, and everyone learns a lot about what their life is lacking from one another. Many of them take these lessons learned and look forward to what tomorrow can bring.  

While Annie is the star of the production, it is Riley DeLuca’s enthusiastic delivery of well-known lines like “Oh Boy” and “Leaping Lizards” that captures the hearts of the audience.  Another stand out is Glynis Ranney’s portrayal of Miss Hannigan that echoed the memorable performance of Carol Burnett as the character in the 1980s movie version. Once Cynthia Smithers arrives as Grace Farrell and Thom Marriot is introduced as Oliver Warbucks the story of Annie becomes a tale about having the utmost optimistic outlook no matter the circumstances.

While “TOMORROW” is the song most associated with Annie, one of the most memorable moments in the musical was the performance of “YOU’RE NEVER FULLY DRESSED WITHOUT A SMILE” during the Bert Healy Radio Show scene. That will be exactly how your family will leave the performance of Annie.  They will be fully dressed in smiles!

There Is A Lot of Buzz Around Drayton Entertainment’s Production of The Birds and The Bees

 

Mating Season Makes for Strange Bedfellows

Set in a rural farming community during their Turkey Days celebration The Birds and The Bees tackles everything from actual birds and bees and their habits to modern day mating amongst members of the local community. During the Media Night Opening of The Birds and The Bees at Hamilton Family Theatre in Cambridge (formally the Dunfield Theatre), this comedic play had the audience in stiches with a side of shock and awe. It had several plot twists as characters wove their way through new situations from the beginning to end of this production.  It dealt with Mother-Daughter relationships, infertility, divorce, casual sex and friends with benefits or as referred to in this setting “No Strings Attached” scenarios. All of these subjects are discussed under the roof of an apiarist as she takes a retrospective look at her past, due to her newly separated daughter moving in. The daughter has nowhere else to go after leaving her turkey farm because of marriage troubles and sets the house a stir when she arrives.  When a young, innocent, researcher and neighbour, with a little too much testosterone, are added to the mix things do not go as smooth as honey at this beekeeper’s household. Perhaps this is what nature intended all along.  By the end of the production you are a little more educated when it comes to all meanings of “The Bird and The Bees”

 

38-year-old Sarah has left her husband and moved back home to live with her mother Gail until she sorts out her life. Despite the fact that she’s a divorcée of twenty years herself, Gail isn’t exactly providing the compassion that Sarah needs. An avid beekeeper, Gail has other things on her mind – like wondering why her honeybees are dropping dead all of a sudden.

From The Screen to The Stage

We have watched the story of HAIRSPRAY on the screen with 3 different ensembles.  The first being the original 1988 John Waters Film starring Ricki Lake, the 2007 film remake of the Broadway version of Hairspray and last year the televised Hairspray Live! This weekend we had the opportunity to see Hairspray The Broadway Musical on stage in Cambridge Ontario at the newly named Hamilton Family Theatre (best known to Drayton fans as the Dunfield Theatre before its recent name change).  We were delighted that the stage had been transformed to the 1960’s television studio where the CORNY COLLINS SHOW gave Tracy Turnblad her big break.  For those not familiar with the story of Hairspray, it’s about a young Baltimore girl that wanted to be on a television dance show but the social norms of that day and age made it a challenge for her.  Soon she learns that there are lots of other barriers that her and her friends must overcome, and she is just the gal to lead the charge.  While this is set in the 1960’s the themes of body image, ageism and racial discrimination highlighted in this show are still issues we deal with in today’s society.  Even though these are serious topics, the positive energy, catchy songs and comedic wit throughout Hairspray The Broadway Musical keeps the audience enthralled in the show from the moment it begins to the last dance scene at the very end.  There was even a moment when everyone in theatre cracked up including the actors playing Edna and Wilbur during their song and dance number.  We think it is wonderful that this sensational show is right here in our region giving everyone a chance to taste a bit of Broadway in our own backyard.

Drayton Entertainment Will Enchant You with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

 

 

Last night we had the opportunity to attend the Drayton Entertainment production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at the Dunfield Theatre Cambridge (soon to be known as Hamilton Family Theatre Cambridge).  It was quite a spectacle to see the “tale as old as time” performed live.  Every detail from character physicality to costume design was on point.  Together with collection of classic songs and scenes set throughout the enormous set, it transported the audience from the Provincial town to the Enchanted castle as the story unfolded before them.
 

In true Drayton Entertainment form, and much like the live action film, the performance gave way to a range of emotions.  There were moments of laughter, tears and heartfelt joy as Belle and the Beast where brought together and torn apart with the assistance of the servants in the castle and Gaston praising townsfolk.  There was even a dance scene with clinking steins that you will want to re-create at your next Oktoberfest celebration! With all of these stage elements blended with the well-known fairy tale, we believe this is an enchanting theatrical performance that your whole family will enjoy.

Since its Broadway premiere in 1994, Beauty and the Beast has become one of the most successful screen-to-stage adaptations of all time, grossing over $1.4 billion in 13 countries. The Broadway musical garnered nine Tony nominations, boasting a win for Best Costume Design and becoming the tenth longest-running Broadway production in history with 5,461 performances between 1994 and 2007. A production in London’s West End subsequently opened in 1997 and the show has continued to tour internationally as well as being produced at regional theatres worldwide.

The 80s were a decade of full of screaming guitars and hair bands.  This era of music is captured well in Drayton Entertainment’s ROCK OF AGES.  The themes of Sex, Drugs and ROCK N ROLL get mixed up with a love story and those taking a stand during a time of change for the Los Angeles strip. Together these storylines combine to make up a musical spectacular you must see to believe!

 

From set design to the choregraphed dance moves, no detail was left behind when it came to setting the stage for this rocking performance.  It was a mix of a rock concert and the story of young love with each element having its own plot twists and humorous escapades.

Wondering what we thought of ROCK OF AGES? Well both Diane and I have had watched this show before. Diane went to the first run of it in Toronto years ago where as I have only watched the film version of this musical.

Diane mentioned that the Toronto version did not have the comedic elements that this show did and she really appreciated how fun Drayton Entertainment made the show.  Being that I only watched the movie I had different plot lines in mind with different characters and enjoyed it being a fresh version of the story.

Drayton Entertainment’s One for the Pot May Have You Seeing Double

When we arrived at Dunfield Theatre this week and noticed all the doorways on the stage, we knew this show would keep us on our toes. Much like It Runs In The Family that also included Eddie Glen and Amanda Leigh in the cast, this British Farce is truly a comedy of errors, mistaken identities, family lineage and fibs.  One for the Pot is set at the Hardcastle estate during an upscale party. As the party guests arrive you begin to question their reasons for being there.  As the party begins you learn about a sum of money that is about to be distributed, but during the party some unexpected but familiar faces arrive looking for their share of the pot.

 

Much like Drayton Entertainment’s Harvest you will see an actor playing multiple roles in this production, but you need to keep an eye on who is entering, exiting and hiding on stage to stay focused during the performance.

Marathon of Hope: The Musical Hopes to Inspire the Next Generation to Continue Terry Fox’s Fight

Drayton Entertainment brings their Marathon of Hope: The Musical to the stage at the Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge Ontario in hopes of inspiring the next generation to keep Terry Fox’s legacy alive. 

To do this they are concentrating on bringing several school groups in to see this run of performances aside from the ones scheduled for public audiences.

Inspired by Terry Fox and his Family

During the intro to last evenings opening at the Dunfield Theatre the audience was told how this inspiring story came to be a musical through the assistance of Terry Fox’s family, friends and individuals he met along his journey.  As added surprise, Terry Fox’s 2 brothers, Darrell and Fred, were in attendance for last night’s show in Cambridge. Darrell Fox took time to speak to those in attendance about what this show meant to him and his family.  This brought a lot of prospective to what the family of Terry Fox went through during the time Terry Fox began creating and embarking on his Marathon of Hope. He also mentioned that the next generation were not alive during Terry’s journey and how important it is to pass this story on to them so they can continue Terry’s fight.

More Than a Musical

This touching rendition of the Terry Fox Story brought back many childhood memories for me. I remember watching Terry Fox on TV and it was really my first introduction to what cancer was and how devastating the disease could be.  What began as a Marathon of Hope in the 80’s continues on today here in our community and around the globe. Marathon of Hope: The Musical is more than just a musical. It’s a look at Canadian history during Canada’s 150^th birthday and a glimpse of what took place before, during and after Terry Fox’s journey. Marathon of Hope: The Musical covers many facets of Terry’s remarkable story, starting with his high school athletic career and family life in Port Coquitlam, BC, continuing through his cancer diagnosis and right leg amputation above the knee, and then chronicling the people and places that motivated him during his 143-day marathon spanning 5,373 kilometres.

We had the opportunity to attend a performance of Drayton Entertainment’s Million Dollar Quartet at the Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge and to our delight many of Rock and Roll’s greatest artists were brought to life!

The very first time show we attended at the Dunfield Theatre was The Buddy Holly Story and much like that musical, this nostalgic production was both a lesson in history and music influence.  This show was set inside the recording studio at Sun Records with their four famous recording artists Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and “The King” Elvis Presley. Together these four iconic musicians create unforgettable collaborations while reminiscing about the events of that year. 

Inspired by the legendary 1956 recording session, which brought together then-rising star Johnny Cash, unknown Jerry Lee Lewis, veteran musician Carl Perkins, and chart-topper Elvis Presley at Sun Records for the first – and only – time.

There Is Some Necessary Roughness In Drayton Entertainment’s Unnecessary Farce

Drayton Entertainment has always been known for their musical productions, but over the past few years they have become the go to company for their farce comedies as well.  With the successful productions of It Runs In The Family and Run For Your Wife , this late summer stage show of Unnecessary Farce is sure to be a hit especially with the inclusion of a hitman.

What To Expect At Unnecessary Farce

The stage is set in an adjoining motel room set up for an undercover police operation.  The two officers involved are wanting their sting to help them move up the rankings of the police force, and they won’t let their inexperience stop them.  The other cast of characters include the local mayor, his wife, his security guard, a newly appointed accountant and a legendary hitman.  Together this ensemble learns about a crime ring which is has been embezzling funds from the local government and using city hall as the means to launder the cash.  While this sounds like the plot to a serious crime story, this show will have you laughing out loud as you watch the actors stumble and bumble their way through the “almost” professional investigation.  There are one-liners, misinterpretations and some necessary roughness throughout Unnecessary Farce.  We think it would be a good choice to take in Unnecessary Farce on your next Parents’ Night Out.

Celebrating Summer With Drayton Entertainment's Legends Of Rock 'n' Roll

This summer Drayton Entertainment is delighting audiences with memories from days done gone by with Legends Of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  This blast from the past spectacle includes tributes to many legendary artists, through entertaining song and dance numbers that the LEGENDS shows are known for.  There’s something for everyone in this stage production.  Whether it be songs from your youth or classics from before you were born, you’ll be singing along with the cast of this captivating show.

Keep The Canada Day Celebrations Going With Drayton Entertaiment's CANADIAN LEGENDS

With Canada Day happening earlier this week, we were delighted to attend Drayton Entertainment's Canadian Legends show on July 2nd to keep the celebration going!

Many of our readers will remember how much we enjoyed Sorry I'm Canadian, and we are thrilled to say that this production is a wonderful continuation of that theme.

A gifted comedian,  Neil Aitchison takes to the stage as his popular alter ego, Constable Archibald F. Inkster, the RCMP officer who last graced the Cambridge stage in the 2013 production, Sorry … I’m Canadian.

This time around, Aitchison has a new horse (Mulcair) and plenty of new razor-sharp satire as he pokes fun at every political party, and some choice individuals – even Queen Elizabeth is not immune from some good-natured ribbing. Aitchison’s homespun charm and relaxed, jovial delivery create an effortless rapport with the audience. He has a spring in his step and added zing to his one-liners as regales the appreciative audience with his personal tales of domestic bliss and unfortunate “furniture disease.”

But the real star of this production is the music, and oh what a feeling it evokes.

Maple Leaf Music

We really enjoyed this musical tribute to Canadian artists and found ourselves singing along and trying to sit still in our seats.  I heard many people after the show comment on they didn't realize so many popular songs are by Canadian singers.  Kudos to Drayton Entertainment for highlighting these incredible musical talents.

AJ Bridel As Dorthy Has Us Over The Rainbow

When it was released that AJ Bridel would be playing the role of Dorthy in Drayton Entertainment's WIZARD OF OZ, we'd say we were over the moon, but we think OVER THE RAINBOW is better suited for this post!



We were big fans of AJ as she competed on CBC's Over The Rainbow (see why by watching the above video) and were lucky enough to have here appear at one of our events shortly after here time on the show.  Since then we  have been to see her in Drayton Entertainments productions of OLIVER! and PETER PAN.  Last Friday we had the opportunity to attend THE WIZARD OF OZ at the  Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge and it was truly magical. From the elaborate costumes to the musical numbers and the wizardery of the whole show was mezmorizing!

Broadway Heroes

Broadway Heroes stars David Rogers. He has been the lead in several theatrical performances including Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat and recently played the role of Jean Valjean at the Drayton production of Les Misérables this past summer.



These memorable performances and tributes to other Broadway Heroes are brought together in the production that includes many amazing extras! By request I was able to get video of this memorable moment with the violinist!

Footloose

Footloose The Musical has all the 80s you can handle! Memories of those toe-tapping song that become dance party athems! While it Footloose had a lot to do with dancing, the focus on this performance is the storyline of Ren's struggle to find his place in a town struck by tragedy.

When they all converge in his cramped apartment at the same time, along with an old school chum who unwittingly gets involved in the confusion, Bernard’s chaotic love life reaches new heights.
A crash landing seems imminent, so fasten your seatbelts for a hilarious farce – you’re in for a bumpy ride!

As for our take on it we enjoyed the turbulance that provided a lot of chaos during the performance.
While this production has an all star cast the stand out character for us had to be Bertha played by Valerie Boyle.  Her comedic banter with the other characters had the whole theatre buckled over in their seats and set the tone for the entire show.
