We'll start with the Disclaimer - Yes we did receive a complimentary tickets, but this just means we're able to offer you a chance attend too! Enter the contest at the end of this post!

Finding My Inner Teen

While most self help sites recommend finding their inner child, I know that putting on some 80s music is all the therapy I need.

Being a teen in the 80s ment you used way too much hairspray to hold that style while you bopped to the top 40 tunes.

One of my favorite songs from that era was Love Is A Battlefield.  I remember not fully understanding what was going on in this video (and now watching it again, I'm still not sure that I do) but I remember I wanted to be Pat Benatar in that striking green dress, doing a shimmy dance battle with what is now referred to as a flash-mob.

Pat Benatar's songs were anthems of the 80's and we are here to tell you she is back on the scene!
Why not re-live some of your 80's memories by heading to see Pat Benatar when she makes a stop at Kitchener's Centre In The Square?

But wait there's more......

Let us know your favorite 80's memories in the comments for a chance to attend the Pat Benatar concert with us! Yes that's right we'll be in the audience and you could win a pair of tickets to attend it too!  So grab those teasing combs and Hit Me With Your Best Shot and let me know why We Belong at the Pat Benatar concert! It may just help you find your inner teen too!

Focusing On Family Budgets

As you know I'm always looking for ways to help families save! That's how the Stuff To Do With Your Kids In KW blog and Facebook Group got started.

As you may have read on my personal blog I received a Blackberry Z10 on Cityline!
If you know me then you know that this is my first Smartphone (yes I know most don't believe me when I tell them that).

So long slider cell phone with a cracked screen!

Now that I have this new piece of tech I wanted to find a way to have a great plan without costing me a ton of cash!

HELLO CELL CHOICE!

I got to know Josh through the Chamber lunch that I often attend for my workplace.  His presentation about how he does all the searching/haggilling/bargain shopping for me was fantastic and he was the first person I emailed after I got home from Cityline.

Wondering How It All Worked Out?

Well this is my facebook post .....

Adventures In Accessibiltiy - Accessible Pumpkin Patch Assessment

We are thrilled to have partnered with Margaret and Dan Lajoie for our Adventures In Accessibility around the Kitchener Waterloo Area.  You may recognize their names from their Van For Dan campaign. These posts are their take about family friendly venues that are accessibile for wheelchairs. Do you have questions about accessibility in the Kitchener Waterloo Area? Leave a comment at the bottom of this post and we will do our best to answer it for you.

Accessible Pumpkin Patch Assessment

Our Pumpkin Patches and Corn Maze post is always a popular one.  Margaret, Dan and the kids decided to visit a couple of pumpkin patches from the list and here are the results

SHANTZHOLM PUMPKINS http://www.shantzholmpumpkins.ca/ Free + cost of pumpkin

We went to Shantzholm and both kids loved it! My husband wasn't able to access the pumpkin field due to the terrain but could easily see the kids (even wagons/strollers wouldn't be able to get into the field very far) but there are some pumpkins right along the path he was on so kids in wheelchairs could still participate picking their own from the field. There are also tons pre-picked at the farm entrance that people can pick from. We did the corn maze, but there were a few areas that got a little bumpy but still manageable. We turned around and came back out the way we went in only because the maze is LONG! Not sure about accessing the animals since we didn't get to it but I noticed lots of strollers and wagons over there so guessing wheelchairs would have no troubles. For younger kids there's a hay bale maze with trikes and Step2 climbers and slides but wouldn't be enough room for a child in a wheelchair to pass through. Wagon ride is definitely inaccessible and pretty steep to lift an older child onto without a second person's help. Parking is NOT favourable for wheelchair users but they didn't mind us using their private driveway to load/unload. If we had asked they might have allowed us to park there due to the circumstances, but it wasn't a big deal for us that day. Highly recommend them and will be returning again closer to Halloween to get our official carving pumpkin! The entire day cost us $3 (1 medium sized pumpkin and 1 large gourde).

SNYDERS FAMILY FARM http://www.snydersfamilyfarm.com/pumpkin-patch (formerly known as Kim-Glo) see website for pricing

Okay, we also went to Snyder's (thanks to free tickets from my boss) so here are my thoughts for anyone with accessibility concerns. The kids had a ton of fun, and my son loved that there were more things for kids his age (9 yrs) including a haunted house and bouncy castles and hay mountains. The animals were literally right in your face at the petting area however..... The ground was extremely uneven for people in chairs and they seemed to be stopping people from bringing their own wagons in too! The farm is very large and spread out with lots to do, but not somewhere I would recommend for those in wheelchairs. We didn't make it to the corn maze so I can't comment on theirs compared to Shantzholm's. In a nut shell, if you're planning on making a FULL day of it and your kids are on the older side (and no wheelchairs) I would recommend paying the money and going to Snyders. If you have younger ones, wheelchairs/wagons, or want a fun free few hours out at a farm then I recommend Shantzholm!

Have you visited an accessible pumpkin patch lately? We would love to hear your thoughts! Leave your comment below or on this post on our facebook group.

IFTTT for iOS Automates Your Everyday Online Tasks

A big thanks to our friend Wendy Morelli for being our first GUEST BLOGGER! Busy parents need all the help they can get when it comes to keeping their families organized and Wendy has a great app review to share with all of you! Take a look, give it a try and leave us a comment on how it helped with your schedule!

IFTTT for iOS Automates Your Everyday Online Tasks

I love my smart phone aka iPhone. Anyone that knows me knows I can’t go anywhere without it. But in my opinion, what makes my phone “smart” are the apps that transforms my device into so much more than just for talking and texting. I’m a big fan of productivity apps, it’s like having my very own personal assistant by my side 24/7. Though there are many fantastic apps available, the one I want to share with you is the IFTTT iOS app affectionately known as “If This Then That”. This app will change the way you manage your digital daily life on platforms like social media, calendar and photos.

Simply put, IFTTT lets you automate online tasks. So if you’re a big Etsy fan, you can tell IFTTT to send a text message each time your favourite Etsy shop has a new item. If backing up your photos is important, IFTTT can save photos taken from your iPhone to Dropbox. Pretty cool, right?

IFTTT currently has 71 web “channels” such as Dropbox, Etsy, WordPress, Evernote, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. IFTTT started as a web based service but with the addition of the app (Android to come), smart phone users can now create “recipes” using apps directly from their device. Therefore, those with iPhones now have access to 3 additional channels, Contacts, Photos and Reminders.

To create a recipe like saving Instagram photos to Dropbox, you’ll need to set up trigger and action channels. The trigger channel in this example is Instagram and the action channel is Dropbox. Put them together and you got yourself a recipe. For you creative types, you can create your own recipes or if you prefer, you can use one of the many that others have shared.  Before the recipe can go “live”, you’ll need to first activate the required channels first.

Here are more examples of what you can automate with IFTTT.

·         Each time you add a new contact, add to Google Calendar or Evernote to serve as a reminder as to when you met.

·         Send a follow up “hello, nice to have met you” email each time you add a new contact.

·         Text every time Instagram user posts to Instagram (useful to keep tabs on what your tween/teen is posting).

·         Download Facebook photos you’re tagged in to Dropbox.

·         Send IFTTT a text message and have it call you (great for escaping bad dates).

·         Email family or friends when photo(s) has been added to a specific album (that way you only share what you want grandma to see).

·         Post iOS photos located in a specific album directly to Facebook.

·         Use Siri to add tasks to iOS Reminders and IFTTT can add to Evernote.

·         Create Google docs spreadsheet of your every tweet.

As a tech geek, I have to say I’m most excited about recipes that can turn lights on or off with a simple text, turn lights on automatically at sunset or even have the lights blink when your favourite team starts a game. You’ll need to purchase either the Belkin WeMo Switch or the Belkin Light Switch in order to use these recipes, but how neat is that?

As you can see, whether you’re an entrepreneur, parent, teacher, blogger or sports enthusiast, IFTTT can help anyone cut down some of the mundane tasks and even let you have some fun at the same time.

Wendy Morelli is an app-obsessed mom of 2 who can't get enough of her smart phone. Read all about her favourite app picks on her blog AppHipMom. Wendy’s latest adventure Tweenhood, is an online magazine for Canadian parents raising tweens. Follow her on Twitter at @tweenhood and @AppHipMom.

Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre Grand Opening

The Closest I've Ever Been To THE GREAT ONE

Yesterday we ventured outside of Kitchener Waterloo to visit our second favorite Ontario city Brantford otherwise known as the Centre Of The Universe.

The Grand Opening Of The Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre

It was the unveiling of the newly renovated Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre and we had a great time at the grand opening celebration.

The dedication ceremony included Wayne Gretzky, Walter Gretzky, Premier Kathleen Wynne, several local dignitaries and a perfomance by Jully Black
You can see all the pics from the day on my facebook album

First there was a ribbon cutting ceremony

Followed by a Street dedication to Walter Gretzky

Next up was the unveiling of the Wayne Gretzky monument (which I only got a side view of while videoing it live)

After the statue was revealed we were able to make our way upfront. This is the closests I may ever be to THE GREAT ONE

And it ended with fantastic concert by Jully Black

It was a memorable day and I feel fortunate to have experienced it with great friends!
