World's Biggest Bake Sale May 31st 10am-6pm
http://biggestbakesale.com/
The organizers of the bake sale understand that a lot of people in our community have allergies and dietary restrictions. We also understand the severity of some allergies and sensitivities and wouldn't want to be responsible for anyone having a reaction. We cannot guarantee that any of the items baked in home kitchens would be completely safe for these people. Having said that, we will have a limited supply of nut-free, gluten-free and vegan items that are being donated from bakeries. The demand is high and supply limited so we can't guarantee that there will be some available all day. The majority of baked goods will be in variety packs of 5 for $5. We will also have some cupcakes for sale individually for $1 and fancier items available individually for $2. This is a rain or shine event

2014 Summer Teen Volunteer Program
Kitchener Public Library is now accepting applications for summer teen volunteers. Read-aloud partners and summer program assistants are needed at all community libraries and at the Central Library, which makes it easy for teens to access this opportunity.
This is a great chance to discover skills, gain experience and earn the service hours needed to graduate from high school, while making a difference in the community.
Volunteers must be Grade 8 graduates age 13 to 18.
Applications can be found online and must be complete by May 31. A screening process, including an interview with the volunteer coordinator and a mandatory orientation session follow.

Hoping to find a young cricket pitcher he can turn into a major league baseball star, JB travels to India to produce a reality show competition called “The Million Dollar Arm.”

UPDATE
Our review of Million Dollar Arm
This film brought America's pastime to a world wide audience.  It showed that while baseball is very popular in North America, there are several parts of the world that do not know how the game is played.  The film also showed that when cultures collide there can be many misunderstandings but choosing to do your best in any situation will help see you through the difficult times.  We also suggest that you watch the credits of the film to see how this movie based on a true story took shape.  If you are looking for a family friendly film with a great message, you should watch MILLION DOLLAR ARM.

CENTRE IN THE SQUARE ANNOUNCES MORE GREAT SHOWS
FOR KIDS IN THE STUDIO THEATRE
Centre In The Square announces four new shows for children coming to The Studio on Saturdays starting this fall: The ToyBox, Manxmouse, Gruffalo’s Child, and Kaput.
“We’ve been very encouraged by the community’s enthusiastic response to our children’s programming in The Studio, which was a new initiative this season. As a result, we’re bringing even more great family-friendly shows to The Studio this fall,” said Centre In The Square CEO Sandra Bender.
Bender saw an opportunity to complement the “Big Event” family shows on The Centre’s mainstage with creative, interactive kid-friendly productions in the informal Studio space on Saturday mornings when families are looking for fun accessible things to do together. All the shows were either sold-out or very close to capacity. In fact, in the case of Casey Carle’s Bubblemania! a third show was added to meet the demand, and it sold out as well.
The ToyBox
Saturday, September 13, 2014
FREE ADMISSION
Entering The Toy Box is much like Alice going through the looking glass. With toys like green screens, dragon tails, projectors and Lego, The ToyBox offers participants an interactive experience using a dazzling blend of projections, lighting, music, costumes, games, drawing materials and building blocks. Whether you are in Grade 5 or Grade 50, don’t miss this opportunity to play, create and activate your imagination through art and technology!
Manxmouse
Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 11 AM and 2 PM
Based on the children’s novel by Paul Gallico, Manxmouse is a play about a brave little creature on a special journey. But can he survive fearsome foxes, terrified elephants and cats big and small to reach his destination? The Manxmouse is one-of-a-kind, with bright blue fur, huge rabbit ears and a distinct lack of tail. But Manxmouse doesn’t mind being different. He knows that destiny awaits him and so he sets out on an exciting adventure. Along the way he meets tigers, hawks and dastardly pet-shop owners, but there’s someone he dreads and desires to meet more than anyone else…the Manx Cat. Recommended for ages 6+.
Gruffalo’s Child
Saturday, November 28, 2014 at 1 PM and 3:30 PM
Based on the award-winning children’s book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, this magical, musical adaption created by Tall Stories Theatre Company has delighted young audiences around the world. One wild and windy night, the Gruffalo’s child ignores her father’s warning and ventures out into the snow. After all, the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist…does he? Songs, laughs and scary fun for children aged 4 and up.
Kaput
Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 11 AM and 2 PM
Kaputis a hilariously funny mix of chaos, comedy and acrobatics for all ages. A young silent movie projectionist is eager to show a film to the audience but his efforts are thwarted by a glitch in his temperamental projector. This award-winning production is a tribute to the slapstick comedy of the silent movie era, created and performed by renowned Australian circus performer Tom Flanagan.
Admission to The ToyBox is free and requires pre-registration through the Box Office (Registration details will be announced at a later date). Tickets to Manxmouse, Gruffalo’s Child, and Kaput may be purchased online at www.centreinthesquare.com, by calling 519-578-1570 or 1-800-265-8977, or in person at the Centre In The Square Box Office (101 Queen Street North). Harlem Globetrotters And PTPA Are A Slam Dunk

The Harlem Globetrotters Head To Kitchener Ontario

We'll start with the Disclaimer - Yes we did receive a complimentary tickets, but this just means we're able to offer you a discount code!
The Globetrotters continue their 2014 "Fans Rule" tour throughout the U.S. and Canada through the end of April. In all, Globetrotters’ tour will visit over 250 cities. Check out their schedule at http://www.harlemglobetrotters.com/tickets. Save $7 off each ticket by using the promo code "PTPA" when you make your purchase.

Hanging Out With The Harlem Globetrotters

I was a 70's kid and loved all things Harlem Globetrotters. I watched their cartoons, their TV specials and appearances on other shows.  They were big in the disco era but I had no idea the team had started many decades earlier. When PTPA announced that they were participaiting in Harlem Globetrotters Fans Rule Tour I knew it would be a slam dunk.

Before the game we had the opportunity to attend a Globetrotters Meet and Greet. I took the opportunity to take a pic of Diane's family while we waited courtside for our turn.

Then we were taken behind the scenes for this green screen photo with two Globetrotter Teamates.

You can see the professional image here

Game On!

We were in our seats by Game Time and let me tell you they put on quite a show! There were spins, dunks, trick shot and more! You don’t have to know anything about basketball to love the Globetrotters. They are letting fans vote on new rules of the game this year – and you don’t have to be a sports fans to participate. Before you go to a game, head to http://www.harlemglobetrotters.com/rule and pick the rule you and your kids want to see in your game.

There was lots of fun throughout the game too. There were dance competitions, appearances by mascots Globie, Big G, and Little G and of course lots of Harlem Globetrotters hoop hijinks!

Family Fun For Everyone

If you see that the Harlem Globetrotters are headed your way, be sure to use the coupon code listed at the top of this post and take your family to see this historic team! Do you have great Globetrotters memory? Post it in the comments below and we can be nostalgic together!

Living Frugal - Be Realistic

Tips For Saving Money In Canada

This post was inspired by an inquiry on the Bargain Hunting Momma Facebook Group.  Also make sure to check out my friend Jennifer's Bargain Hunting Momma blog for great info!

As you know we've been posting about Low Cost And Free Events in the Kitchener Waterloo Area here on the Stuff To Do With Your Kids In Kitchener Waterloo blog since 2009.  The blog came from our need to take each of our kids to events that didn't have us breaking the bank.

We would run into people that would say "Hey I didn't see you at the Firefighter Open House (or insert family friendly event here).  Our response was "Had we known about it we would have been there" We found many other parents felt the same way and so this blog and facebook group was born.

Beyond events we are pretty proud of how frugal we are.  Here are some ways we save and can help you on your saving journey as well.

The DOs and DON'Ts of Saving Money

  1. Visit our Online Coupons For Canadians Pinterest board
  2. Watch Gail Vaz Oxlade's Til Debt Do Us Part. You can learn a lot from this show.
  3. Don't buy something just because it's on sale. If you don't need it right now, save up for when you can actually afford it.
  4. Don't use your credit cards for shopping. Only use them for car repair emergencies, parking lot machines and reserving hotels (but let the booking agent know you will be paying cash for your stay)
