RIOCAN #RedDotSafespot Bully Free Zone Launch - Media Coverage

RIOCAN Partners With Degrassi And Leave Out Violence

Wondering what the RIOCAN Red Dot Safe Spot is? Listen to what these Degrassi cast members have to say about it.

#RedDotSafeSpot Launch

Last weekend we were invited to attend the #RedDotSafeSpot launch at the Yonge Eglington Centre.

The event include members from the Degrassi televison show, local dignitaries and representatives from RIOCAN and Leave Out Violence all speaking about Bully Free Zones and what they will mean to them.

RIOCAN kicked off the event by letting everyone know that RIOCAN Malls are bully free zones.  Which means anyone report bullying to their security and info desk and the issue will be dealt with immediately. From the Red Dot Safe Spot "About Page"

These are places friends and family can rely on to provide a safe shopping environment, with the comfort of knowing that bullying is not tolerated.
To learn more about bullying we suggest checking out their FACTS page and their Frequently Asked Questions area.

After the RIOCAN presentation we were introduced to the Leave Out Violence (aka LOVE) Ambassador, greetings from a local council member, a mental health expert and three members from the Degrassi cast.  Each one of these young actors had something personal to say about how bullying had been a part of their life why they were glad to be a part of this project.

Afterwards we, along with a few of our friends, had the opportunity to meet the Degrassi actors

It was an inspiring event with lots of great initiatives to stop bullying.

What stood out for me the most was when one of the actors said

"Courageous people speak out against bullying".

We agree, so we are encouraging you to speak out against bullying! Join the conversation by using the hashtag #RedDotSafeSpot

Steve Nash Attends The #BrightWayForward Event - Media Coverage

Tangerine Bank Makes A Difference In Canada

Earlier this week the Tangerine Bank #BrightWayForward event took place at the YMCA in Toronto.  Their goal is to empower Canadians.  You can learn more about this initiative at by watching this video

and by heading to the Tangerine Bank website to see how they are helping to empower over 50,000 Canadians with the help of NBA All Star MVP Ambassador Steve Nash

From the Tangerine Bank website:
We’ll still be cheering for Steve long after he steps off the court. As Program Ambassador for Bright Way Forward, Steve is helping to empower more than 500,000 Canadians, including helping 15,000 kids across Canada develop leadership skills, sportsmanship and a love for the game through Steve Nash Youth Basketball. His contributions, both on and off the court, are why we’re proud to be his partner. #ThanksNash
“Tangerine’s support will help us provide skills, teamwork and leadership coaching to more than 15,000 kids in communities across Canada. By teaming up with Canada Basketball and all of these incredible charities, there's no doubt this initiative will help inspire and make a positive difference in the lives of countless Canadians by giving them a Bright Way Forward.” -Steve Nash

At the event Steve Nash spoke to the kids of the Toronto YMCA about empowerment.  He explained that at age 13 he decided he would be a basketball player.  He worked hard and focused on his goal. Even though he is not the tallest or fastest he became an NBA All Star and MVP.  He also took time to go over skills with the kids at the event.

Surprised some future stars in T.O. this AM as part of Tangerine Bank’s Community Gym! Creating a #BrightWayForward

You could feel the great energy in the room and they gave the kids the tools to feel empowered in what they love to do.

Thanks to ShesConnected for the invitation to cover this event. Oh and in case you didn't notice in the video above I WAS SITTING BEHIND CANADIAN BASKETBALL GREAT STEVE NASH!!!!!!

World Autism Day 2015

Centre In The Square Introduces Us To Magnusmode

Over the last couple of months Centre In The Square has brought Magnusmode in to demostrate the Magnuscards App.

From the Magnusmode ABOUT US page
Inspired by her younger brother Troy, Magnusmode was created by Nadia Hamilton, a Toronto-based entrepreneur that has dedicated her life to assisting individuals with special needs. Troy has autism, and at the age of 24 faced a frustrating lack of options after he graduated from high school. As an instructional therapist, Nadia has worked with many families facing similar challenges. She understands their fears and frustrations. This led her to create a set of online tools that would blend proven methods of instruction with elements of game design, and cater to the unique needs of teens and young adults with autism and other special needs.

By attending the performances that highlighted the app, we were able to follow step by step instructions that the approvided.

The steps including things like

*How to find your seat
*How to order beverages from the concession stand
*Who to identify with if assistance is required

We did a trial run of the steps to find our seats when we attended the Shaping Sound performance.

As you go through the steps you earn points. So the app has both learing and gaming elements to it.  After going through the steps to find your seat we sat back and enjoyed the show.

The second time the Magnuscards app was presented at Centre In The Square was when The Preservation Jazz Hall band took the stage.  This time the attendees were encouraged to use the app to purchase concession stand items, similar to the way we used it to find our seats.

After the presentation we got to hear the world famous Preservation Hall Jazz Band!

Being that April 2 is World Autism Day we thought it would make sense to tell you all about our experience!
