Marathon of Hope: The Musical Hopes to Inspire the Next Generation to Continue Terry Fox’s Fight

Drayton Entertainment brings their Marathon of Hope: The Musical to the stage at the Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge Ontario in hopes of inspiring the next generation to keep Terry Fox’s legacy alive.

To do this they are concentrating on bringing several school groups in to see this run of performances aside from the ones scheduled for public audiences.

Inspired by Terry Fox and his Family

During the intro to last evenings opening at the Dunfield Theatre the audience was told how this inspiring story came to be a musical through the assistance of Terry Fox’s family, friends and individuals he met along his journey.  As added surprise, Terry Fox’s 2 brothers, Darrell and Fred, were in attendance for last night’s show in Cambridge. Darrell Fox took time to speak to those in attendance about what this show meant to him and his family.  This brought a lot of prospective to what the family of Terry Fox went through during the time Terry Fox began creating and embarking on his Marathon of Hope. He also mentioned that the next generation were not alive during Terry’s journey and how important it is to pass this story on to them so they can continue Terry’s fight.

More Than a Musical

This touching rendition of the Terry Fox Story brought back many childhood memories for me. I remember watching Terry Fox on TV and it was really my first introduction to what cancer was and how devastating the disease could be.  What began as a Marathon of Hope in the 80’s continues on today here in our community and around the globe. Marathon of Hope: The Musical is more than just a musical. It’s a look at Canadian history during Canada’s 150th birthday and a glimpse of what took place before, during and after Terry Fox’s journey. You can learn more about the research that went into this production by watching the video below.

Marathon of Hope: The Musical covers many facets of Terry’s remarkable story, starting with his high school athletic career and family life in Port Coquitlam, BC, continuing through his cancer diagnosis and right leg amputation above the knee, and then chronicling the people and places that motivated him during his 143-day marathon spanning 5,373 kilometres.

Marathon of Hope: The Musical is on stage from May 15 to June 4.  Regular performance tickets are $46 for adults; $27 for youth under 20 years of age. Tickets for selected Discount Dates and groups of 20 or more are $37. HST is applicable to all ticket prices. Tickets may be purchased online at www.draytonentertainment.com or toll free at 1-855-drayton (372-9866).

Norm Foster Finds a Home @ St. Jacobs Country Playhouse with Drayton Entertainment’s Production of Jonas and Barry in the Home

Many of our readers are familiar with the work of famous Canadian Playwright Norm Foster. We have been to several of the Drayton Entertainment plays written by him including last year’s productions of THE MEN’S FOURSOME, THE LADIES FOURSOME, and one of our favourites LOOKING.

This week we were invited to attend to attend Drayton Entertainment’s production of Jonas and Barry in that Home that was not only written by Norm Foster but also starred Norm Foster in the role of Jonas.

The show is set on the outdoor patio of a seniors’ retirement residence and while it mentions the others living in the establishment it is acted through 3 characters, Barry, his daughter Rosemary who works there, and new resident Jonas. Thorough these 3 people we see their views points on love and marriage, divorce and new relationships, sickness and health, life and death and how everyone deals with thoughts of aging. Together this trio inspire each other to make the most of their current situations while encouraging each other to learn from their past mistakes.  Through their stories you may laugh, and maybe shed a tear as you relate to each of these situations.

Jonas and Barry are as different as night and day. When the two men both move into Gateway Gardens assisted living home, they unwittingly become fast friends and look for ways to liven up the joint, while teaching each other some important life lessons along the way.

Spring Fireworks @ Grand River Raceway In Elora
Lighting up the sky is the just the finale to the Spring Fireworks Night that promises hours of entertainment and family fun.   The Elora Lions have been presenting a fireworks event since the beginning of time (maybe a few years less?).  This favoured tradition has changed and grown from year to year and is now generously hosted by the Grand River Raceway in Elora.  With an exceptional location at the Raceway, the Lions work with other groups in the community to create a night full of variety, kids’ activities and, of course, a dazzling fireworks display.
The Spring Fireworks always takes place on the Saturday following the Victoria Day weekend in May. Admission this year is $5 per person. Family rate is $20. Proceeds to Groves Hospital where we are fundraising $20,000 for the new build.

The annual Grand River Raceway Open House is a free, fun event for all ages. Come on by to discover horse anatomy, care basics, blacksmiths and fun racing facts. While you’re here, tour the facility and even drive a racehorse on the racetrack!
A complete tour of the facility takes about an hour and will run rain or shine, so no matter what the weather looks like, we’ll see you there! Just a friendly reminder, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times
