Alex Armbruster – KW People Doing Big Things

Alex can you explain to our readers about how spending a day at a local KW skate park put you on your current career path?

Well I should say that at this point (2010) I had been inline skating at a pretty competitive level for about 10 years. I happened to be at the Kitchener Auditorium Skatepark or “The Aud” as we call it and one of the owners of a professional BMX/Inline stunt team called the “Craz-E-Crew” happened to be there riding his bike. He was watching me skate around doing my tricks and he came up to me and asked “have you ever thought about doing live shows?” basically offering me a job since they were looking for an inline skater at the time. A couple weeks later, I was in Saudi Arabia performing live shows for 10 days. It was really one of those crazy times when preparation met opportunity and I didn’t know it then, but that was a huge turning point in my life. In many ways, these shows prepared me for what was to come.

I had been performing in these live shows for a year or so when I met some other friends through skating that worked in the film industry as stuntmen. I saw how much fun they were having and the great living they were making and thought to myself “I need to get in on this”. So I convinced them to give me my first shot on a small MTV show to be a part of a small fight scene. From the moment I stepped on set, I was hooked. I ended up doing lots of extra and background work to meet other stunt coordinators in the business; always bringing my resume and demo reel with me. I was constantly training different skillsets, getting as good at everything as I could. Eventually, they also gave me a shot and I started to make a pretty decent reputation for myself. Six years later, here I am today!

Where has your stunt career taken you throughout the years?

For the film and TV part of my career, I mostly film in either Toronto or Montreal. We usually have between 10 and 30 TV shows filming in Toronto/Montreal year round with one or two big feature films per year. I am looking into getting my U.S. green card and would love to work down south of the boarder at some point. In my spare time, I do still like to perform in the Craz-E-Crew stunt shows. Performing with this awesome group of guys has taken me all over the world from Saudi Arabia, India, and all over the U.S. and Canada. It truly was a blessing getting “noticed” at the Aud that one day back in 2010.

What current and upcoming roles will you be stunt-doubling for?

My most current role that I stunt doubled for was El Diablo from the feature film Suicide Squad. I’ve also doubled for James Franco on the TV mini-series called 11/22/63 based off of the Stephen King novel and produced by JJ Abrams. Also for Wilmer Valderrama on Minority Report, Sam Rockwell on Poltergeist, and I also double for Yannick Bisson on CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries as the Murdoch double just to name a few.

How have your online and offline communities supported you with your stunt career?

Nowadays, being online is a pretty essential key to success. The ability to create and share my demo reels, headshots, and just to simply let people in your community know what you’re up to can mean the difference between landing or losing a job. If a stunt coordinator is looking for a guy with inline skating experience to double an actor and he just recently saw that I posted a new video of me skating online, there’s a good chance I’ll be in the running for that job. If you’re out of sight, you’re out of mind. You’ve got to stay in their faces and being online is a great way to do that.

My offline community, which I would consider my close family and friends, have always been so supportive of my career choice. I’m very grateful to have such a strong support system that encourages and motivates me to excel in anything I put my mind to. Most recently, this would be the sport of skydiving.

What would your dream role be?

My dream role would be to double a famous lead super hero in a big feature film. Yes, I most recently doubled El Diablo in Suicide Squad who would be considered a super hero or super villain I suppose. However, there were very few stunts for his character and although it was my career highlight thus far, my dream role would be to double someone like Superman or Green Lantern with a ton of big stunts. But hey, I’m not complaining!

Any advice for anyone looking to get into this line of work?

Be prepared to work incredibly hard. It’s a very tough business to get into but it’s not impossible. With the right work ethic, attention to detail and the ability to adapt to a million different situations while making the job look easy, this job could be for you. First off, you need to be really good at something. Stunt coordinators need a reason to hire you over hundreds of other established stuntmen/women. Get some headshots, make a resume and demo reel. If you manage to get your first shot, get good at everything else so that you can continue working. I would recommend getting your foot in the door by doing some extra work as a background performer which allows you to understand all of the lingo and how the business works. Being on set is like being in a different world and it takes some time to adjust and to figure it all out. Once you get to this stage, bring your demo, resume, and headshots with you whenever you’re on set. If there are stunts happening that day, try and introduce yourself to the stunt coordinator when they’re not busy and ask if you can give them your info. From there, it’s in their hands. Good luck!

Smouldering Songs Set The Scene For Drayton Entertainment’s Smokey Joe’s Cafe

Drayton Entertainment’s final show this season at the Drayton Festival Theatre is the iconic Smokey Joe’s Café. This production is performed completely through song. The singers bring the heat with songs like Ruby Baby and they set the stage on fire with their rendition of Jailhouse Rock, but it’s the smooth songs like Hound Dog that smoulder throughout the show.

All of the songs featured in this musical are written by the famous songwriting duo Jerry Leiber and Mike Stroller, who had many hits throughout the 1950’s. The songs in Smokey Joe's Cafe are accompanied by choreography that brings the story of each performance to life. The mix of solo and ensemble songs along with the live band on stage, sets the scene of local nightclub from that era.

There Is Some Necessary Roughness In Drayton Entertainment’s Unnecessary Farce

Drayton Entertainment has always been known for their musical productions, but over the past few years they have become the go to company for their farce comedies as well. With the successful productions of It Runs In The Family and Run For Your Wife , this late summer stage show of Unnecessary Farce is sure to be a hit especially with the inclusion of a hitman.

What To Expect At Unnecessary Farce

The stage is set in an adjoining motel room set up for an undercover police operation. The two officers involved are wanting their sting to help them move up the rankings of the police force, and they won’t let their inexperience stop them. The other cast of characters include the local mayor, his wife, his security guard, a newly appointed accountant and a legendary hitman. Together this ensemble learns about a crime ring which is has been embezzling funds from the local government and using city hall as the means to launder the cash. While this sounds like the plot to a serious crime story, this show will have you laughing out loud as you watch the actors stumble and bumble their way through the “almost” professional investigation. There are one-liners, misinterpretations and some necessary roughness throughout Unnecessary Farce. We think it would be a good choice to take in Unnecessary Farce on your next Parents’ Night Out.

The Drayton Entertainment Female Force Comes To Play In Norm Foster’s The Ladies Foursome

It’s time to hit the green once again with Drayton Entertainment’s THE LADIES FOURSOME. This follow up to Norm Foster’s THE MEN’S FOURSOME, a production they performed earlier this theatre season, has brought audiences back to the St. Jacob’s Country Playhouse for more guffaws on the golf course. Unlike The Men’s Foursome which had the fellas reminiscing after a University reunion, these gals are playing a round in honour of friend that had just passed away. Three of the four ladies knew each other through weekly golf games with the deceased and the fourth was the owner of a vacation spot that the recently departed stayed at annually. Each of the women had very different personalities, jobs, dreams and family issues, but these issues were looked at with fresh eyes as each topic came to light throughout the course of the day. Most of the conversations were met with a bit of sarcasm and someone pointing out the obvious to another that was oblivious. Tension was met with humour and ultimately each of the ladies left the day feeling more supported and accomplished than when she arrived.

You don’t need to be a golf pro or even an amateur to appreciate Drayton Entertainment’s THE LADIES FOURSOME and with the LPGA heading to the area later this month for the Manulife Classic, this play will help you get into the swing of things!

For Pete’s Sake, Go See Disney’s Pete’s Dragon - Review

When I first received the press release in 2015 that Disney would be releasing a new live action version of Pete’s Dragon I had no idea just how amazing this film would be. Not only was this movie on point with the visuals it also pulls at your heart strings. So much so though that I keep thinking that it’s a pun on a famous Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song. I feel the title of the song should now be “Stop DRAGON My Heart Around”

So yes during this film I laughed and cried. We can say it had “all the feels” that you expect from a Disney classic.

What To Expect From Pete’s Dragon

The film begins in a very sweet way but soon you learn how Pete became lost in the forest. The young boy is in what could be a very awful situation until he happens to be saved by a dragon. Soon you see the film change as you learn Pete has been growing up in the woods under the watchful of dragon he named Elliot. This scene in the forest are very reminiscent of Mowgli and the animals in THE JUNGLE BOOK that was released earlier this year. Soon after the plot changes again as Pete and Elliot learn about the world just outside of the forest.

The animators did a great job of bringing Elliot to life through CGI. When he is first introduced you notice the fur and the forest colours in it, but as the movie goes on you begin to recognize the facial features and characteristics of the 1977 animated version of Elliot. They also kept the time frame the same with the use of station wagons, pickup trucks and corded telephones from that era.

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

We think this film is a great way to spend some family time, not only to see the film, but also to learn about the importance of trees and surrounding environment.

Currently the top contact lens research centre in the world is continuing to accomplish great things through research done right here at UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO. The studies are non-invasive and all of our participants are compensated at $20/hr for their time and often get free contact lenses or glasses. Right they are recruiting 7-11 year olds to participate in a 3yr study cclr.uwaterloo.ca

Infant Studies Group
If you’re looking for something new and fun to do with your child, we would love to have you participate in one of our studies! Help us discover how children learn about language and the world around them. Typical studies involve a one time, half hour visit. Great program for youths in the KWC area. Our participants come not only from Cambridge, but Waterloo, Kitchener, Brantford, and surrounding areas as well. We are not the Scouts. We are not the Army, Navy or Sea Cadets. We are a the only Youth Drum and Bugle Corps in the area! No experience required and we have a modest membership fee ($20 per year). Allianz Global Assistance hosts an annual BBQ and Carnival in support of Send’em Off Smiling (SOS). SOS is a children’s charity where we fundraise to purchase new school supplies, clothes and running shoes and put it all into a backpack for underprivileged children in our community for their first day back to school.

Our event will include games such as a water bucket splash, pie in the face, high striker, raffle table, henna tattoos, and many more fun carnival games where people can win prizes.
