Cyber Security Awareness Month Seminar With Safety Tree And Binary Tattoo – Enter To Win

Did you know that OCTOBER is CYBER SECURITY AWARENESS MONTH? While there are some great tips on the Government of Canada website, there are so many other things to think about when it comes to staying safe online.  That is why our friends at Safety Tree have partnered with Binary Tattoo to assist parents with what they should know when it comes to their child’s / children’s online presence.

These topics are seldom spoken of when it comes to internet safety, which means there is not a lot of information out there.  Safety Tree and Binary Tattoo want to ensure you are properly prepared for these online issues and have the tools to thwart any threat to your family’s online security.  This is why Safety Tree is holding a workshop for parents.

Waterloo Region Parents:
We are very excited to be partnering with Binary Tattoo to bring you 'Social Media 101 for Parents' on Sunday October 30th from 7-8:30pm.
In this talk we help empower parents with the knowledge of what kids are doing online and how best to help them navigate this new digital world. You will leave with lots of information and tips from starting conversations to monitoring.
To register, email your full name and email address to
info@safetytreecanada.com.

We think this is an important seminar for parents to attend, especially parents in the Region of Waterloo.  Being that we are living in the tech hub of Canada, it is highly likely that our kids will be using the online world at various ages for a variety of tasks. Whether it be for homework, messaging friends or online gaming, parents need to know what their children are doing on the web.  Make sure you register for this important information session and be sure to check out the other safety courses that Safety Tree has to offer. As you know from our last Safety Tree post, keep your family safe in any situation is their priority.

A Few Lessons In Internet Safety

Online Safety

Being an early adopter of facebook many think my life is an open book.  Let's just say I am very selective about what I post.  My facebook is a slice of my life..... Just a slice.

Know YOUR Boundaries

Everyone has to decide how much they want to share and who they want to share it with.  Remember back in 2011 the TAKE THIS LOLLIPOP facebook app? Basically you accepted the app and gave the app clearance to your facebook profile.  It created a story about how the facebook stalker would use your personal info to find you.  Let's just say creepy doesn't even cover it.  After that many started to take a closer look at what they were sharing online.

Be Strict With Social

I always think of this line from The Social Network "The internet's not written in pencil Mark, it's written in ink"

No truer words have been spoken. You see it over and over again with brands that slip up. They try to quickly take down a terrible sounding post, but by then someone has retweeted it or taking a screen shot of it.  Always remember that what you say online stays online.

Stay Informed

Social networks keep changing and when they do they often change their disclaimers as well.  Those disclaimers can often include changes to privacy to those using the site in question.  Be sure to take those few extra minutes to fully read the disclaimer before clicking ACCEPT.

Facebook is just one example of an ever changing social network.  Make sure to look over ESET's post on Facebook Graph Search: How to keep your data private and Know who your Friends are: Staying safe on social sites

For more info about ESET Security and it's PTPA approval visit my post Why ESET Smart Security Six Is On My List. There you will find information about the 15% off Discount Code for ESET SECURITY SIX.
