Things Are Coming Together at the Waterloo Park Project Thanks to #TDCommonGround

This post is sponsored by TD and the TD Common Ground Project

We'll start with the Disclaimer - Yes this is a sponsored post, but this just means we're able to tell you about all the great things happening at Waterloo Park!

In June when we mentioned that Waterloo Park was making some big changes thanks to #TDCommonGround. The #TDCommonGround Project is an initiative by TD to revitalize green spaces across Canada in recognition of Canada’s 150th birthday.  The infographic below, based on the findings from the TD GreenSights report, shows why green spaces are important to each community.

Together TD and The City of Waterloo are creating change in Waterloo Park to improve both pedestrian and bicycle traffic throughout the park.  One way this will be accomplished is by the construction of an additional bridge in the park.  The twinning of the Silver Lake bridge will help people get to their destinations in the park in a convenient way.  Another project that is being worked on is a dedicated cycling lane which will serve as a safe route for those on bicycles to ride through the park and avoid hazards pedestrians walking by.  The final upgrade is for a refreshed park entranceway to welcome all those coming to Waterloo Park.

Today we are glad to report that the project is underway and you can look forward to seeing the changes in 2018.

Things Are Coming Together to Help You Get Together @ Waterloo Park

For those of you not familiar with Waterloo Park, it is a wonderful gathering place where everyone can spend time in the City of Waterloo.  There are playgrounds, picnic areas, sports fields and even animals in the park.  It is a great place to spend some time alone or get together with others.

With the completion of the Light Rail Transit system and the upgrades to Waterloo Park in 2018 it is sure to be a historic year for the City of Waterloo!

Waterloo Park Gets to Recognize #Canada150 with New Park Projects Thanks to #TDCommonGround

When it comes to one of the best family friendly places in the City of Waterloo, Waterloo Park needs to be at the top of your list. With playgrounds, sports fields, picnic shelters, a splash park and a small animal zoo, Waterloo Park is a hub of activity in the area.  When I was young I remember Waterloo Park just for the animals and the wading pool, but as the years went by Waterloo Park evolved to meet the needs of the community.  The pool became the very cool LIONS LAGOON, an annual Christmas Light display called Wonders of Winter came to be and every summer they now have outdoor movies in Waterloo Park. The fact Waterloo Park changes with the times might be why it is still a favourite spot for citizens of the area to gather at.

Waterloo Park Projects for 2017

Being that this year is Canada’s 150th Birthday, TD with Waterloo Park is recognizing the milestone by unveiling a new project that they are working on in the community. Thanks to funding from #TDCommonGround this  project in Waterloo Park will make getting through the park much more accessible, safer and eventful for everyone. I spoke with the City of Waterloo about these projects and here is what I learned.

Since the LRT construction is happening near the Waterloo Park entrance located along the Laurel/Trans Canada Trail, the walking and biking trail along this section has been disrupted and as you can see by my pictures below it is getting difficult to distinguish which routes are for vehicles and which are for pedestrians.

Since the trail is part of both the Trans Canada Trail and Laurel Trail systems it is used by many people daily and safety is becoming a concern.  To create easier and safer access, the bridge will be twinned with a separate route for cyclists. Other park improvements includea new pedestrian entranceway on the Central St. side as well as a new meeting place. These changes will make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists which in turn will bring more people back to the park.  Once these projects are completed there are plans to hold more events in Waterloo Park. These events will take place in the Twin Bridge area by Silver Lake.  Possible events may include Farmers’ Markets, Musical Acts, Art Festivals and more! I can’t wait to see what all the changes look like once they are complete!
